Danish porcelain manufactory, founded in Copenhagen in 1853 by Frederik Vilhelm Grøndahl and the brothers Meyer Hermann and Jacob Herman Bing. For more than a century, Bing & Grøndahl ranked among the most defining Danish porcelain brands before merging with Royal Copenhagen in 1987.

The manufactory is known above all for inventing the Christmas plate tradition: Bing & Grøndahl produced the first Christmas plate in 1895 under the title "Bag den frosne rude" ("Behind the Frozen Pane"), designed by Frans August Hallin. The tradition was continued and shaped the international collector porcelain culture of the 20th century. Other central pieces are the Heron service (1888) with its characteristic heron decoration, the Måge seagull service (1892) and porcelain figurines by designers such as Pietro Krohn, Effie Hegermann-Lindencrone and Kai Nielsen. Characteristic is the embossed Bing & Grøndahl logo with the three Copenhagen towers.

On the vintage market, early Christmas plates (before 1900) and service pieces from the Måge and Heron series from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are especially sought after. When you examine a piece, look for the embossed three-towers logo, the artist's painted signature and the delicate glaze quality characteristic of Bing & Grøndahl.
