Bernardaud Vintage Furniture and Design

Bernardaud was founded in 1863 in Limoges (Limousin, France) and is one of the defining French porcelain manufacturers of the Limoges district. In 1900 Léonard Bernardaud took over the company; the house remains family-owned to this day and is run in the fifth generation by Michel Bernardaud. The Limoges porcelain tradition rests on the region's kaolin deposits, which have enabled the finest French porcelain production since the 18th century.

Bernardaud is characterised by hand-painted white hard-paste porcelain in both classical and contemporary idioms. Well-known Bernardaud classics include the Aux Oiseaux, Constance, Champ de Blé and Louvre tableware services, alongside collaborations with designers and artists: Marc Newson (Trois Fleurs), Olivier Gagnère, Jean Boggio, Sylvie Coquet, Sarah Lavoine, as well as co-editions with houses such as Hermès, Dior and Annick Goutal. Materials include high-fired Limoges hard-paste porcelain with underglaze and overglaze painting, often with hand-painted gold-rim accents and relief decoration.

On the vintage market, original Bernardaud editions from the 20th century are especially sought after, above all discontinued decor variants and limited artist editions. When you examine a piece, look for the underglaze “Bernardaud Limoges France” mark stamped on the base (with a date code), the hand-painted decoration with a recognisable brush signature and an intact gold rim without wear. On designer editions, an additional artist signature adds to the value.
