Barovier & Toso Vintage Furniture and Design

Barovier e Toso is one of the oldest glassworks still in production in Europe. The Barovier family has been documented as glassmakers on Murano since 1295: this is the Murano glass family par excellence. In 1936 the Vetreria Artistica Barovier glassworks merged with Vetreria S.A.I.A.R. Ferro Toso to form today's Barovier e Toso, which under the artistic lead of Ercole Barovier (1889-1974) became one of the defining Murano manufacturers up to the 1970s.

Over four decades Ercole Barovier developed a series of technically revolutionary processes: Murrine Romane, Cordonato d'Oro (with fused gold leaf), Eugeneo (with an air-bubble pattern), Rugiadosi (with a finely granulated surface), Damasco and the Primavera series. Alongside these came collaborations with Carlo Scarpa (Battuto vases with a hand-ground matte surface), Ettore Sottsass and contemporary designers. The manufacturer is family-owned to this day and still produces at its original Murano site.

On the vintage market, Barovier e Toso vases and bowls from the 1930s to 70s are especially sought after, above all Ercole Barovier classics in Cordonato d'Oro, Eugeneo and Rugiadosi as well as Carlo Scarpa Battuto pieces. When you examine a piece, look for the workshop label (older Barovier marks up to 1990 as a paper label on the base), the original workshop engraving (signature “Barovier” or “Barovier & Toso”), the layer precision of the fused gold leaf or murrine, and an intact rim without regrinding.
