B&B Italia Vintage Furniture and Design

Italian furniture manufacturer based in Novedrate (Como). Founded in 1966 as C&B Italia by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli together with Cesare Cassina, with the aim of producing industrially manufactured upholstered furniture at a high design level. In 1973, the two parted ways; Cassina continued with traditionally built upholstered furniture, while Busnelli continued the company as B&B Italia.

The technical basis was the cold-foam injection molding technology developed in the 70s, which allowed complex seating shells made of polyurethane foam to be produced in a single casting process. On this basis, central pieces of Italian modern design were created with designers such as Mario Bellini (Le Bambole 1972, Camaleonda 1970), Gaetano Pesce (UP series 1969, originally for C&B), Antonio Citterio (Sity 1986, Charles sofa 1997), Patricia Urquiola, Naoto Fukasawa, and Vincent Van Duysen. The Camaleonda sofa and the UP-5 Mother armchair experienced a significant vintage revival in the 2020s via social media.

In the vintage market, early C&B Italia productions before 1973 as well as early B&B Italia pieces from the 70s and 80s are particularly sought after. When examining a piece, look for woven fabric labels (Camaleonda, Le Bambole) or the embossed logo on the base (UP series). Original fabric in period-appropriate colors such as carmine red, mustard yellow, or brown adds value.
