Artek was founded in Helsinki in 1935 by Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), Aino Aalto (1894-1949), Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl, originally to produce and market the Aaltos' furniture and lighting, and to combine them with modernist art and interior design. The name Artek is a combination of the words "Art" and "Technology" and is programmatic for the fusion of art and industrial production.
Artek's most famous classics are the Aalto furniture: the Stool 60 (1933, three-legged stacked stool made of bent birch plywood), the Chair 66 (1935, with characteristic L-legs), the Paimio Armchair 41 (1931, originally designed for the Paimio tuberculosis sanatorium) and the Tea Trolley 901 (1936). Artek also produces furniture by Ilmari Tapiovaara (Domus Chair), Eero Aarnio (Mademoiselle Armchair), Yrjö Kukkapuro and, more recently, Konstantin Grcic, Naoto Fukasawa and Tom Dixon. Materials include solid and bent birch plywood from Finnish forests, leather, wool and linoleum. In 2013, Artek was acquired by the Vitra Group and continues to produce in Finland.
In the vintage market, early Artek-Aalto editions from the 1930s to the 1960s are particularly sought after, especially Stool 60 originals, Chair 66, and Paimio armchairs. When examining a piece, look for the burned-in "Artek Made in Finland" brand mark on the underside of the seat or frame (dating is possible based on the label's shape), intact birch laminate without cracks or warping, and original leather upholstery or linoleum seat surface.
