Arflex was founded in 1947 in Milan as a spin-off of the Pirelli group, to bring the then-new Pirelli foam rubber into industrial use for upholstered furniture. This early link between industrial chemistry and furniture making shaped Arflex into one of the most technologically innovative Italian furniture manufacturers of the post-war era.

Marco Zanuso's early Arflex classics were groundbreaking: the Lady armchair (1951, Compasso d'Oro 1953) with Pirelli foam upholstery and a slender wooden frame, as well as the Sleep-O-Matic sofa bed (1954). For Arflex, Cini Boeri designed the Strips sofa series (1968/69, Compasso d'Oro 1979), the modular Botolo seat and the Serpentone sofa. Other key designers include Carlo Bartoli, Carlo Colombo, Marcel Wanders and Jean-Marie Massaud. Arflex remains one of the internationally present Italian furniture brands and continues to produce its classics under licence.

On the vintage market, Zanuso's Lady armchairs and Boeri's Strips sofas from the 1950s to 70s are especially sought after, above all in their original covers or with high-quality period-correct reupholstery. When you examine a piece, look for the sewn-in Arflex label on the underside fabric (with production date and model name), intact Pirelli foam that has not begun to crumble, and the characteristic slender wooden legs free of structural damage.
