Wohnbedarf Vintage Furniture and Design

Wohnbedarf AG was founded in Zurich in 1931 by art historian Sigfried Giedion, architect Werner Max Moser, and Rudolf Graber, and is one of the most influential institutions of 20th-century Swiss furniture modernism. Wohnbedarf combined sales, publishing, and its own production, shaping the discourse on modern living in Switzerland for several decades.

Wohnbedarf distributed the central classics of international modernism in Switzerland, primarily furniture by Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, and Alvar Aalto, and simultaneously produced its own editions by Swiss designers. The best-known Wohnbedarf in-house production is its sales and production involvement in the Landi chair by Hans Coray (1939), designed for the 1939 Swiss National Exhibition (Landi 39) in Zurich: a perforated aluminum chair that is one of the defining Swiss design icons of the 20th century. Wohnbedarf also published furniture by Max Bill, Hans Bellmann, Sigfried Giedion, and others. For decades, Wohnbedarf operated its own retail store on Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich.

In the vintage market, original Wohnbedarf editions from the 1930s to the 1960s are particularly sought after, especially early Landi chairs with their original aluminum surface and Wohnbedarf editions of international modernist classics with Swiss distribution labels. When examining a piece, look for the embossed or stamped "Wohnbedarf Zurich" label on the underside of the seat or body, which often includes the original dating and model designation, and for intact original manufacturing without aggressive restoration.
