IKEA Vintage: cult instead of consumption
What's celebrated on Instagram today used to be part of the regular product range. Many sought-after IKEA pieces were created between the 1970s and early 2000s—a time when IKEA increasingly collaborated with designers, tested new materials, and continually evolved its product philosophy: Democratic design —functional, aesthetic, accessible.
This is how furniture was created that was so unique that it lasted for decades.
Our favorites at a glance
1. Impala armchair (1970s)
The Impala is one of the most expressive lounge chairs IKEA has ever produced. Its design is minimalist, almost sculptural – a tubular frame meets a wide, angular seat upholstered in faux leather or fabric.
It was often compared to the Eames Lounge Chair—not because it was as iconic, but because it translated the principle of casual, low-to-the-ground seating into a youthful, affordable way. Today, the Impala is traded at collector prices at auctions and vintage markets.
2. Enetri Regal by Niels Gammelgaard (1985)
The Enetri shelf was a modular marvel: lightweight, transformable, and stable—with an open steel frame inspired by Gammelgaard's work for the PS collection. It could be expanded, stacked, or used as a room divider.
Many see the Enetri as IKEA's interpretation of the Bauhaus philosophy: form follows function, affordable, and universally applicable. Hard to find today—and almost never complete.
3. Jerker Desk (1999–2005)
Originally designed for gamers and tech workers, the Jerker became known for its extreme modularity. Height-adjustable, with add-on elements, monitor arms, and shelves—a workhorse with design aspirations.
Today, it is almost worshipped as a cult on Reddit and other social media platforms – especially the “Gen 1” model with its particularly robust steel construction.
4. PS Collection (since 1995)
The PS series (“Post Scriptum”) was IKEA’s platform for experimental design – with designs by international designers such as Thomas Sandell, Matali Crasset and James Irvine.
Each edition demonstrated that IKEA could also be radical, playful, and forward-looking. Many pieces were limited editions—and are now among the most sought-after items.
