Christian Liaigre - Timeless elegance for rooms with tranquility and character
shares
When you think of French design, you immediately think of artistic opulence or playful mid-century charm. Christian Liaigre took a different path – and in doing so, created a distinctive style that still resonates today: luxurious without being loud. Reduced, but never cold. Timeless, rather than trend-stricken .
From riding stable to design studio
Born in La Rochelle in 1943, Liaigre grew up surrounded by riding stables and sailboats—both of which shaped his sense of form, function, and material. After studying in Paris and Zurich, he initially designed furniture before moving on to create entire interiors: apartments for Karl Lagerfeld, the Mercer Hotel in New York, and later yachts and private homes around the globe.
Why his designs inspire today
What distinguished Christian Liaigre was his uncompromising search for clarity in space . Instead of opulent forms, he opted for simple volumes, balanced proportions, and natural materials—leather, bronze, walnut, linen. The furniture acts as a tranquil anchor in the room, yet is of high quality and visibly handcrafted .
“I want a room to feel breathing—not decorated.”
This is exactly what his designs achieve.
