In 1930, Aino and Alvar Aalto designed various pieces of furniture for an exhibition in Helsinki on the theme of “The Apartment for the Subsistence Minimum”. So they were faced with a decision: a folding bed that could be stored in a niche in the wall during the day, or a sofa bed? They chose the furniture with the dual function - the sofa can be converted into a bed with just one movement. In addition, the position of the backrest and seat can be individually adjusted. Through Sigfried Giedion, the Aaltos came into contact with the Swiss furniture store Wohnbedarf, and with the tubular steel furniture manufacturer Embru, Wohnbedarf brought the sofa to series production in 1933. The sofa is in good to very good condition. The original cover only shows slight signs of wear.
