1960s This elegant set of 6 drinking glasses and 1 water carafe is made of smoked glass in a beautiful purple amethyst shade. The glass design is reminiscent of the i-114 series designed by Timo Sarpaneva for the Finnish glass factory Iittala from 1959 to 1970. The dimensions of the drinking glasses are: diameter = 7 cm and height = 7.5 cm. The dimensions of the carafe are: diameter = 7 cm and height = 22 cm. Finnish design is known for glass. Iittala is home to a Finnish Glass Centre, the only operating glass factory in Finland. The history of Iittala began in 1881, when a glass factory was established in the village. Today, Iittala's design history is known worldwide. The names Alvar and Aino Aalto have been associated with Iittala from the very beginning. Alvar Aalto wanted to "free" glass from geometric form and give the impression of organic, living shapes. Aino and Alvar Aalto believed that objects should be indispensable, beautiful, useful and accessible to all. Today, the legendary Aalto vase is a symbol of Finnish design and one of the most famous glass objects in the world. Each vase is hand-blown at the Littala glass factory.
