As an entry for the "International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design" announced by the New York Museum of Modern Art in 1948, Charles and Ray Eames submitted a chair with a one-piece, ergonomically shaped metal seat shell, the base of which was variably interchangeable. The concept was progressive in a time when chairs mainly consisted of a seat, backrest and fixed legs. Although the design was awarded second place, its expensive material made it unsuitable for series production. In their search for an alternative material that was malleable but still robust and suitable for industrial processing, the Eames came across polyester resin reinforced with fiberglass fibers, a material new to the furniture industry. The Fiberglass Chairs came onto the market as early as 1950 and quickly became very popular due to their variability and exceptional durability. It is an original from this period and not the re-edition that Vitra has been bringing back onto the market since 2018. This classic fiberglass armchair features a wire base with struts and forms the Lounge Height Armchair, Rod Base (LAR).
