Seller's description

Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, born in Utrecht on June 24, 1888, was a Dutch architect, designer and member of the artist group De Stijl. The proponents of De Stijl ("The Style"), also known as Neoplasticism, advocated a reduction to the essentials of form and color; they simplified visual compositions through vertical and horizontal lines and used clearly defined primary colors. The strictly geometric shapes characterize his designs and are also clearly visible in the Utrecht armchair, which he designed in 1935 for the Dutch department store Metz & Co. The white contrast stitching skilfully highlights the cubic form. The armchair with red fabric is in good condition with signs of wear.
